My name is Roberta Ruggiero. I am president and founder of The Hypoglycemia Support Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 1980 to increase awareness of the causes, effects and latest treatments of functional hypoglycemia. Through my organization, my book, The Do’s and Don’ts of Hypoglycemia: An Everyday Guide to Low Blood Sugar, and this website, I share my personal experiences and years of research surrounding this most confusing, complicated and too often misdiagnosed condition. My goal is to learn and teach every single thing about controlling hypoglycemia before it controls you!
Whatever avenue I use, my message is the same – YOUR SYMPTOMS MAY NOT BE “ALL IN YOUR HEAD!” If you suffer from severe depression, fatigue, mood swings, mental confusion, headaches, blackouts, heart palpitations, insomnia, irritability, suicidal tendencies, etc., you may be a victim of hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar!
I know firsthand the plight of the hypoglycemic because I have been there. I overcame 10 years of this debilitating illness, which included visits to dozens of doctors, an endless number of tests, and thousands of worthless and sometimes dangerous pills. I was even subjected to the administration of electric shock therapy—a horrific experience. A simple GTT (glucose tolerance test) and proper DIET finally led me to the road to recovery!
What happened to me over 45 years ago is still happening today, as evidenced by the correspondence I receive. While I sit in my home office in South Florida, e-mails arrive on a daily basis from around the world. I correspond with parents, teachers, students, patients and even doctors from as far away as China, India, Pakistan, Africa and Japan. It is sad to say but everyone has one thing in common – the painful and devastating effects of hypoglycemia.
In all my years of trying to educate hypoglycemics, they in turn, have educated me. They told me what they needed and wanted and, above all, what they were not getting. I learned of their pitfalls, anxieties and fears. Mirroring my own feelings, everyone I have encountered seemed to respond with the same universal phrase, “If only I had known…”
I pledge to you that I will continue to work endlessly to bring hypoglycemia back to the forefront of medicine where it belongs and, at the same time, change people’s lives for the better. Now that we have met through this blog, perhaps as partners we can help put a human face on a silent disorder that for millions of people can turn their lives upside down from one day to the next. Leave a comment here to let me know what you are struggling with or what you need help with. Share your experiences with me and others.
I hope and pray that today, through the information on these pages, I have planted the seeds of hope, determination, strength and persistence. I hope I make a difference. Let us begin!
Here’s to your health,
